Auburn earns national seed, hosts South Alabama in NCAA Tournament
AUBURN, Ala. (auburntigers.com) – The Auburn soccer team earned its 14th NCAA Tournament appearance on Monday afternoon and will host the first round match against South Alabama. The tilt between the Tigers and Jaguars is slated to take place at the Auburn Soccer Complex on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 12 p.m.
Auburn earned the No. 4 seed in the Florida Regional, marking the third time in program history the Tigers received a national seed and the first time ever in back-to-back seasons.
“It’s always exciting and fun to see Auburn up on the board,” said head coach Karen Hoppa. “We’re really excited to get a seed. In soccer, they only seed the top 16 teams in the country, so that’s a real privilege to have that number come by our name.”
Auburn comes into the national tournament with a 14-6-0 mark. The 14 wins is tied for the fifth-best mark in program history. The Tigers touted nine SEC wins and matched the school record for victories in league play this season.
In last year’s NCAA Tournament, Auburn reached the Sweet 16 for the first time ever after winning a home match versus Southeast Louisiana and a neutral site contest against Texas Tech.
The Tigers are 4-2 all-time in the annual postseason tournament when playing at the Auburn Soccer Complex and have won their last two dating back to 2011.
South Alabama recently captured the Sun Belt Conference’s automatic bid after winning the league tournament. The Jaguars (15-5-1) have made the NCAA Tournament in the past four seasons.
The two teams have already seen one another this year with Auburn prevailing in double-overtime, 1-0, in Mobile, Ala. on a header from Courtney Schell in the 107th minute.
“We’re excited,” stated Casie Ramsier. “It’s exciting to get a seed back-to-back [years] and to know we get to host at home for the first round is always awesome. We’re pumped and ready to play.”
