Butler Co. School Superintendent Officially Resigns
Butler County School Superintendent Darren Douthitt has quit, but he left a school board meeting without officially revealing where he's going.
Darren Douthitt isn't saying anything officially about where he's heading, although he's been offered the job as school superintendent in Anniston and that city's paper says he's taken the job. Douthitt is saying he gave it his all in Butler County, and emphasized the importance of keeping the focus on the children.
The Butler County School Board meeting was standing room only as more than 150 people packed the building to hear the Superintendent resign, "I appreciate all the lessons learned and the experience earned, and I do because I kept my focus on the students and that's what kept me sane," says Douthitt.
No matter how parents and educators felt about the Superintendent they say they wish him well as he moves on, "I believe he's made the best decision for hisself personally and the best decision for our school system as well. I believe it's time for a change," says Julie Sellers Swann, a Butler County Schools parent.
A former employee of the Butler County School System, Merle Brown, says, "He came with his integrity, he did a good job as far as I'm concerned, and he left with his integrity. And all I can say is that Butler County's loss is Anniston's gain."
The School Board will hold a meeting January 30th at 6pm to choose an interim superintendent. Butler County school board leaders say Douthitt's last day will be February 14th.
