Cahaba Center Holds 35th Annual Special Olympics in Selma

By George McDonald

From the West Alabama Newsroom-- The city of Selma hosted a very special sporting event Tuesday morning at Memorial Stadium.

The 35th annual Cahaba Center Special Olympics gives people with intellectual disabilities an opportunity to compete in athletics.

Organizers say more than a hundred Special Olympians took part in more than a dozen events.

They say the participants look forward to the event each year because it allows them to show off their athletic skills – and interact with the community.

“Just seeing the smiles on the competitors faces, it just gives you a feeling of happiness,” said event volunteer Chris Turner.

Organizers say the Selma Special Olympics is the largest local event in the state.
