Community Behind Chase Corner Feels Betrayed By Developer

Construction at Chase Corner once again has neighbors who live behind the shopping center frustrated.
This time, because of elevation concerns.
Workers will not be leveling the land to match that of the neighborhood and that has many people outraged. It's a story you'll only see here on CBS 8 and ABC Montgomery.

Construction is still underway at Chase Corner, where a Buffalo Wild Wings, an Outback Steakhouse, a Jared Jewelry Store and a Whole Foods Market are being built. But residents, like Larry Cornwell, who live in Halcyon Forest say they're being built much too high.

"You can see in the view behind me, it's about 10 feet above our own level right here," he explains. "That means that any cars that come into the parking lot, will shine their headlights right into our windows."

Jim Skelley moved into the neighborhood four years ago but says he never would have had he known about plans for an elevated shopping center. He tells us the constant vibration from construction has even damaged his pool and says he worries about runoff water.

"We had no clue that that was going to happen," he says. "Are we going to have to buy flood insurance? It's very expensive if we can even get it."

"The water is running along the plastic and the mud," says Leanne Cornwell. "I sank up to my ankles."

Leanne says she believes Aronov, the developers, lied to the residents.

"Every time I come home, the elevation is higher and now the cars are going to be looking into my backyard," she says. "They're above my fence. And we were not told that they were going to bring the elevation up this high."

We spoke with Jack Aronov by phone who gave us this statement;
"We are leaving a 50 foot buffer, which is the commitment we made to the neighbors. We are spending more than a million dollars on trees to provide an additional buffer. We are confident that when the installation is made, there will be a good screen between the neighbors and the shopping center."

But residents aren't buying it.

"The biggest trees that they're putting in are 15 foot," says Cornwell. "Now, that's significant if Chase Corner was going to be down to our level but it's not. It's going to be at least 10 feet above that."

Residents are also upset because they say the taller, older trees planted in the neighborhood were supposed to be protected but have fallen into the area of construction, meaning they could soon die.

Jack Aronov told us he plans to meet with the residents of Halcyon Forest to discuss the project within the next two days.
