Residents React To Troy Murder On Their Street

By Amanda Wade

Residents say they are shocked after an early morning murder in what they call a quiet and seemingly safe neighborhood. And police say they have a man in custody for the crime.

Police say 26 year old Marquise McLendon was shot and killed at the Trojan Crossing apartment complex on South Brundidge Street.

Gus Turner, Jr. lives nearby and heard the gun shots, "It shot about nine times, Bam bam bam bam bam bam bam, you know, I jumped up, I looked, you know it's just right across the street. You know, bullets don't know nobody."

Investigators say the resident of the apartment where the murder happened was not home at the time of the shooting. Police say they have arrested 21 year old Dimitri Miles on charges of murder in connection with the case. According to a statement from Troy University's Athletic Director, Miles was a member of the Troy football scout team, but is no longer associated with the team because of the alleged murder charges. The Dean also confirms in a statement Miles is suspended from the University until charges have been settled.

Emergency crews transported the victim in an ambulance to Troy Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Chris Wilson, a South Brundidge Street resident, was watching the scene unfold, "They took a guy out of the apartment, put him in the ambulance, a guy was on top of him doing CPR, and after that, I just really kind of quit watching."

The Troy Police Department says the homicide is still under investigation and they do not yet know the cause of the shooting. They say Miles is being held at the Pike County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

If you have any information in this case, you are asked to call the Troy Police Department at 566-0500 or their secret witness line at 566-5555.
