House Approves Changes To Failing School Law

By Alabama News Network

The Alabama House of Representatives has approved changes to a GOP-championed program that provides scholarships and tax credits to help move students from failing public schools to private ones.

Representatives on Wednesday voted for a bill that increases the tax break that individuals get for scholarship donations. The bill also changes the deadline from Sept. 15 to May 15 for when leftover scholarship funds can go to middle and low-income families who are not currently zoned for a failing school.
Republican Chad Fincher said the changes will assure the scholarship program is well-funded and provides school options to parents.
Lawmakers approved the bill in a 63-39 vote that split largely along party lines.
Democrats argued the program is designed to help families who already plan to attend a private school.
