New Group Advocates For Campus To Carry

By Sarah Cantey

New Alabama gun laws make it easier for gun owners to carry.

One Troy University student read through the bill, front and back, and got the idea that guns should be allowed on campus.

That was the inspiration behind the new group- students for campus carry.

Originally voted down by the student government association, university administrators overturned that and allowed them to be recognized as a student organization.

That doesn't mean guns will be allowed on campus, instead the group will brainstorm ideas to potentially try to change university policy.

Whether or not guns should be allowed on college campuses is a topic with passionate views on both sides and has some students in the middle.

Makenzie Ervin, a Troy University student said, "I obviously was raised in the South so I think we should keep our guns if we have them for our own reasons but also I want to be safe in the classroom, I don't want to worry about someone walking in with a gun. So either way honestly."

There's been no public discussion by university leaders of changing their weapons policy since this group has been formed.
