New Teachers In Butler Co. Getting Ready For School Year
For Butler County, new teachers are starting their first year with the school system. As the new superintendent starts her first full year as well, expectations are high for both.
Nearly 40 new teachers will be filling classrooms throughout Butler County this fall. Some have taught in other systems, while others are first time educators.
This week, they are in new teacher training, kicking off a year long process called Butler County's B.E.S.T; which stands for Beginning Educator's Support Team, "Research shows that most new teachers that leave the profession early, it's because they weren't supported. So, we want to make sure that our teachers are supported, they get the information that they need as they come in...It's going to be an ongoing process. It's not just that we're giving them a lot of information up front. In fact, we've kind of scaled that down and they'll have support systems all through the year," says Litta Norris, Butler County's Administrative Assistant for Teaching and Leading.
This is also new superintendent Amy Bryan's first full year in office. She says teachers new and old can expect to learn new things about different aspects of the school system, "They might learn about the transportation department one week, and child nutrition the next week, and a new curriculum program the next. Maybe it will be the alternative school or all kinds of things. They will learn from me and that's kind of what I plan to do this year."
Many of the new teachers, like Arlyn Williams, say the programs are calming their nerves about the first day, "The first school I was hired at, I was hired at about 4pm and started the next school day at seven, so it's really nice to have a lot of teaching and being prepared before the school year starts."
Officials with the school system say there were many openings because more than one dozen teachers retired at the end of last year and others left to go back to their hometowns.
Norris also says Butler County offers a signing bonus and additional technology when recruitiing new hires to bring in the best candidates for the school system.
