Revitalizing Georgiana By Bringing Buildings Up To Code

Georgiana's mayor says his main focus for the year is revitalizing the city starting with downtown buildings.

Mayor Jerome Antone says of the nearly 15 buildings downtown, less than half are occupied. He says a beauty shop opened in April, and an arcade is on its way, but many of the buildings are not up to code, leaving store fronts bare and uninhabitable for business.

The Mayor says getting these buildings in better shape will make the town more attractive to business owners, "Our number one focus is getting the owner's to bring their buildings up to code, and if not, they will be condemned. We feel as though if they can bring their buildings up to code, it will bring beautification to downtown because it's very unattractive when you see a building that's falling in and no one is doing anything about it."

Antone says the building owners have already been notified about code violations and a few buildings near downtown Georgiana are already being torn down.
