Alabama Man Sentenced in Dogfighting Ring

By Alabama News Network

One of six people arrested for being involved in a dogfighting ring has been sentenced to five years in state prison.

WSFA-TV ( ) reports Roderick Sweetwyne admitted to being involved in the Tallapoosa County dogfighting ring, and also pleaded guilty to drug distribution charges. Sweetwyne's specific role in the dogfighting ring is unclear.

New Site Police Chief John McKelvey says the ring involved 55 dogs that were found at three locations. McKelvey says three of the dogs involved in the ring have died, but most of the others have been adopted.

Sweetwyne's attorney Jason Jackson says the state had a weak case against his client, but he felt it was in his best interest to accept the state's offer considering evidence that was presented.
