Police Chase Ends When Car Plunges Down Ravine

By Alabama News Network

A driver police say led them on a chase is in critical condition after his car crashed off a closed bridge and plunged down a ravine in northern Alabama.

Authorities say two passengers in the car are also hospitalized.

Huntsville police say the chase began when officers tried to stop the 28-year-old driver shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday.

WHNT-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1ntrAPq) that police and Madison County sheriff's deputies chased the car on rural roads and used "stop sticks" at one point to damage two of its tires. Authorities say the driver took a wrong turn, learned there was no bridge due to a construction project, and went down a 15-foot ravine.

The driver and two passengers were taken to Huntsville Hospital. Police say the driver will likely face jail when he recovers.
