Tuscaloosa Woman Convicted of Murder of Ex-Husband

By Alabama News Network

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Jurors say a Tuscaloosa County woman is guilty of murder in the shooting death of her ex-husband.

The panel deliberated about 90 minutes Thursday before returning the verdict against 32-year-old Tracey Grissom of Northport.

Prosecutors say Grissom opened fire on estranged husband Hunter Grissom at a boat ramp in May 2012 because she wanted to collect more than $100,000 in life insurance.

Grissom testified she shot the man because she was afraid of him.  The defense says Hunter Grissom abused Tracey Grissom, and he was awaiting trial on rape and sexual assault charges at the time of his death.

Grissom had pleaded innocent by reason of insanity or mental defect, but jurors rejected that defense.

A judge will sentence Grissom on Sept. 2.
