ASU Hornet Stadium Having Attendance Problems?

By Ashley Thompson

Alabama State University's football stadium made its debut about a year ago to a sold out crowd. But has the stadium generated the same crowds since?

Hornet Stadium was a 62 million dollar investment. University officials expected to get that money back by hosting concerts and other events but students say that hasn't been the case.

"For it to be a black campus and black college, they don't really do much to do the crowd up and get them hype for the game except maybe little things around campus," says student Gary Gardner. "So that's why there's not much happening or people going to the games for real."

Average attendance for home games this season has been just over 8000. Hornet stadium seats over 26,000. According to Alabama State's sports website, the game with the highest attendance so far has been against Southern with 15,143 in Hornet Stadium. The lowest attended game was against Prarie View A&M with just 1,123 people showing up.

We asked some students how many games they'd been too

"This year, sadly zero," says student Robert Echols.

"I try to make a few but most of the time, I'm at work," says Gardner.

But there is one more home game - the 90th Turkey Day Classic, which will be against a new opponent this year, Stillman. Some students tell us they're on the fence about going.

"Historically it's been us versus Tuskegee and we've got so used to that and so now we have Stillman, it's like ugh," says Shani Phillips.

Though ASU Director of Marketing Tyrus Sturgis says he's not worried about attendance at that game.

"We've had some ups and downs in the stadium but we're proud of our team and the results that we've got," he says. "We just want our fans to keep supporting our teams."

Since our report, Alabama State University officials have updated and Alabama News Network on attendance numbers for several games... "The game with the highest attendance in the New ASU stadium was ASU vs. Jacksonville State with a listed attendance of 20,703. ASU vs. Southern would actually rank second with an attendance of 15,143. Attendance at ASU vs. Prairie View A&M was 11,825. The average home attendance is 14,385."
