How Much More Should Gus Malzahn Make?

By Ashley Thompson

Auburn head football coach Gus Malzahn will renegotiate his contract with university officials after this season.

When he was hired last year, few predicted the football program would have as big a turn around as it's had.

There's no doubt Malzahn played a role...but how much more is he worth?

Sitting at 11-1, the Auburn Tigers recently clinched the SEC West title and will go on to play in the SEC Championship game in Atlanta. All this, after the team won just 3 games in 2012. Many credit Malzahn with the recent success and say he deserves a hefty pay raise.

"I think he's proven himself in the SEC, winning the West," says fan Denzel Williams. "That's a tough division so I'm pretty sure he deserves more than what he's getting paid."

"I think he should be getting paid a little bit more, maybe 3 or 4. If Saban makes 5, he can make 3 or 4," says Darian Warren.

In the SEC

Nick Saban is the highest paid college football coach, ranking in over 5.5 million a year. Louisiana State University's Les Miles comes in 2nd, making 4.3 million and Steve Spurrier of South Carolina is the third highest paid, bringing in around 3.3 million a year.

Coach Malzahn makes 2.3 million, which is toward the lower end for an SEC coach. But should he be making as much as other winning coaches? Sports Attorney Don Jackson says Auburn needs to pay up or Malzahn could take another job.

"I think the biggest point of leverage that the head coach has in this particular situation is the fact that he's a fairly young head coach, which would make him very marketable to other major programs around the country. We've even seen this week, Steve Sarkisian leaves University of Washington and goes to another school right in his conference."

But Sports Analyst John Longshore says Auburn needs to be cautious when re-negotiating Malzahn's contract.

"Does Auburn go ahead and pay Malzahn a big hefty salary with a large buyout? They were just burned with Gene Chizik on that. After the national championship season, they had the 11-million dollar buy out. They had the huge yearly contract and two years later, they were eating most of it."

Still, some football fans say Malzahn is worth the risk.

"With what he did to Bama, give him that money," says Chiara Perkins. "Give him that money."

Honestly i think Gus Malzahn should get payed at least 5.3 Million. He has proved himself not only to auburn fans and players but to College Football itself. He has turned the AUBURN Football team around dramatically, and was also named coach of the year. What more can you ask from for a football coach.
