River Region Cements New Partnership With Maxwell AFB

By Alabama News Network

Maxwell Air Force Base broke ground on a new park with Montgomery and other cities from around the River Region.

Right now, all you see are a few soccer goals, but the plan is to add fitness stations, playgrounds, and a running track to this open field.

And this entire project is being funded by public and private donors from around the River Region, including the cities of Montgomery, Wetumpka, and Prattville.

"We asked for what are your greatest needs and this was identified as something the military couldn't do from military construction dollars but it was for the families," said Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange.

Maxwell is one of only a handful of bases across the country with a relationship like this.

And the River Region Freedom Park is just the beginning.

"Oh my gosh, there are lots of opportunities that we're working with the river region area. We're looking at sharing contracts between the city of montgomery and the base. We both let millions of dollars worth of contracts. Why shouldn't we cost share those contracts and save money between the city and the United States Air Force?" said Col. Trent Edwards, 42nd Air Base Wing Commander.

"We are actually working with them for areas that we wouldn't have imagined five years ago. For instance, we will bring online later this summer our municipal solid waste recycling facility. Why can't we come on base and pick up the garbage here? For a fee of course," said Mayor Strange.

Construction is set to start in the coming weeks, with the plan of finishing by early summer.
