Volkswagen has temporarily halted sales of about 25,000 cars in the United State because of a fire risk.
The affected vehicles include current models of the VW Jetta, Beetle, Beetle Convertible and Passat.
All are equipped with a 1.8 liter engine and an automatic transmission.
Volkswagen said a faulty o-ring, which joins tubing and other vehicle parts, can cause transmission fluid to leak - and could start a fire.
The automaker says no fires or crashes have been reported.
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified, and volkswagen will replace the part for free.
The company is working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on issuing a recall.
