Free Lunches Available To Children In Greenville

By Amanda Wade

School is out for Summer, but for many kids in Greenville that means the school lunches they depend on each day are not there.

However, thanks to the Summer Food Service Program, they are not going hungry.

There are 13 sites in Greenville that participate in the federally funded program, making sure kids do not go hungry in the Summer, and one church is taking the program a step further.

Lane Simmons, The pastor at Greenville's First Assembly of God says they have between 30 and 55 kids come for lunch each day, "They have a lot of free time, and we're also not only providing the meal for them, but some time to just loosen up a little bit and just be kids. So we're super excited about this."

After the kids eat, church volunteers sing songs and play games with them, "The programs that they do is to enrich them about going back to school and have a better life and teach them what is right and what is wrong," says volunteer, Kimberly Finley.

Julie Davis, whose four kids participate in program, adds, "It brings kids off the streets away from the drugs and violence and teaches them a little bit about God and how to have God in their lives."

Program directors say throughout the city, they are feeding nearly 700 kids each day.

The Summer Food Service Program is available to any child age 18 and under and runs through the middle of July.
