Historical Sign Marking Trail Of Tears Found In Butler County

By Amanda Wade

A historical sign marking the Trail of Tears that was stolen in North Alabama has been found in Butler County.

A volunteer with the Butler County Historical society says she was contacted about a sign on County Road 7 stating it was part of the original Trail of Tears, but that road is far from the original site. The sign is from Dekalb County and had been missing for nearly a year.

Butler County Sheriff Kenny Harden says stealing signs can cause more problems than you may realize, "We don't need people going around stealing signs. You know, if they steal this sign they may steal a stop sign, could get someone hurt. It's theft and people shouldn't be stealing signs."

Harden says they don't have any leads on how the sign got to Butler Count and it will be sent to Dekalb County.
