Could Troy University Be Getting A New Rec Center?

By Sarah Cantey

It's been a topic of discussion for years- a new recreation and wellness center for Troy University. The Student Government Association is pushing to make it a reality. But a state of the art facility comes at a hefty price tag, and some students wonder is it worth it?

Right now on campus there's a weight room, pool and gym located at separate spots spread across campus. The student senate recently unanimously passed a resolution for a fee- 125 dollars per semester earmarked for building and maintenance of a new state or art rec center.
But that doesn't mean tuition will go up right away. The fee would start next semester and only be applied to freshman and sophomores, since upper classman would most likely not be able to take advantage of the new facility before graduating.
Jeseka Kaaa said, "If you go in the rec center there's not a lot you can do. I think if you have a bigger facility it allows more people to come and get involved."
Samantha Mantz said. "I can definitely agree with her on that because the rec center is small but, it's just, I think there's a different way we could definitely handle the whole financial part of it."
Student government association will meet Friday with the student services committee of the board of trustees to talk about the proposed fee. The committee will then make a recommendation to the board of trustees. Only then would concrete plans begin for where and what all will be in the new facility.
