A man holds a child in a bunker for a week, it's a story that had people across the world hoping and waiting for a resolution.
Next Wednesday will mark one year since that hostage standoff in Dale County began, but Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson says it feels like yesterday.
At the end of January 2013, Jimmy Lee Dykes allegedly stormed a school bus killing bus driver Charles Poland Junior and snatching 5-year-old Ethan.
State, local, and federal officials spent days negotiating with Dykes, before nearly a week in storming the bunker killing Dykes and rescuing Ethan. Sheriff Olson says this incident shows the importance of agencies working together and says the community is continuing to heal.
Sheriff Wally Olson said, "Our community came together through a terrible time. And it makes you proud to know that your community is willing to come together like that. I just really....thank you. For the way people were willing to sacrifice."
Sheriff Olson says even one year later, he doesn't want people to forget about the bravery of Charles Poland Junior.who sacrificed his own life to try to protect the kids on his bus from Jimmy Lee Dykes.
