Union Springs Could Increase Sales Tax
You could soon be spending a little more for almost everything in the Bullock County town of Union Springs.
That's if the city council approves a proposal to increase sales tax from 9 percent to 10 percent. The extra revenue would go to improve recreation facilities and give a pay raise to city employees. That's drawn criticism, because Bullock County's unemployment rate is one of the highest in the state and raising taxes could negative impact local businesses.
"The city's got two options. Either it can raise sales tax or cut expenses. That's all there is left, those two options, and that's all there is left to do," said city council member Brian Agnew, who says he's still deciding how he'll vote.
The city council is set to vote at its meeting Monday.
