Union Springs Police Chief Clarence Wheeler Steps Down

By Ashley Thompson

Clarence Wheeler is now the former police chief of Union Springs. Wheeler submitted his resignation tonight at a city council meeting pending retirement.

After going into executive session, this vote was moved to the top of the agenda and Wheeler decided to step down.

Council members accepted his resignation pending retirement. Wheeler, who has served as police chief for more than 10 years left the courthouse shortly after the vote.

""I think it was the best thing for me and the department at the time," he says.

Union Springs Mayor Saint Thomas was pushing for Wheeler's termination saying he had violated policy a number of times and wasn't fulfilling his job duties. But Wheeler says he's done anything wrong.

"No, I havent done anything. Not that I know of"

Wheeler is on paid leave until Thursday, when details of his tenure are worked out. His attorney says Wheeler is doing what's best for him right now.

"Chief Wheeler has made a decision based on the best interests of his health and the department and this community and his family, says Attorney Mickey McDermott. "I think we should all commend him for his years of service."

Though not everyone was pleased with the decision.

"He's a great guy," says Timmy Shields. "He takes his word real hard and it's kind of sad to me that he's not our chief but in my heart he will always be my chief."

Danny Jackson, a 20 year veteran of the Montgomery Police Department, was appointed interim police chief at Monday nights meeting. Something that came as somewhat of a surprise to him.

"I got the call to come to the city council meeting," he says. "I really didnt know what to expect but I'm excited now."

We tried to speak with both the Mayor and his attorney about the vote but neither one of them could talk with us saying they have to wait until details of tenure are worked out for Wheeler.

A special called meeting will take place on Thursday, March 6th to determine the details of Wheeler's tenure. Stick with Alabama News Network as we continue to cover this story.
