Troy Wins Big on Final Day of Troy Classic

The Troy softball team finished the Troy Classic on a high note, beating the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, 6-2, on Sunday at the Troy Softball Complex.

TROY, Alabama – The Troy softball team finished the Troy Classic on a high note, beating the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, 6-2, on Sundayat the Troy Softball Complex.

 

Three Trojans had multi-hit games on the night. Senior Amanda Winters and sophomore Erica Davis had two hits and senior Kate Benton had three.

 

Freshman Claire Graves (1-0) pitched a complete game and got the win, recording 15 straight outs for the Trojans after a second-inning, two-out single. She faced 24 batters, striking out four and walking only one. She gave up two runs on two hits in seven innings of work.

 

A monster fifth inning sealed the deal for Troy (7-3) as it scored four runs to take the lead, 6-2. Senior Hannah Day got the hits started with a single to right field. Sophomore Carli Kayler pushed runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt.

 

Senior Khadija Neely then walked, setting Davis up for an RBI double down the left field line scoring Ashley Rainey and Day. Benton came up hot on Davis’ heels with a double of her own to center field that scored Davis and Neely.

 

Troy’s first two runs came in the third and fourth innings on a pair of singles by Winters and Davis.

 

Tennessee Tech’s two runs came in the bottom of the first inning when Alyssa Richards sent a long ball over the left field wall scoring Sabrie Neeb who was on after drawing a walk.

 

Danielle Liberatore (1-3) suffered the loss for the Golden Eagles (3-6), giving up six runs on nine hits in a complete game.

 

Troy travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Wednesday to take on No. 5 Alabama at 5 p.m. The Trojans will then host their Trojan Warrior Tournament, which begins on Friday and ends next Sunday. Troy’s first game will be against Dayton on Friday at 5 p.m.
