Cano Ties School Record in Victory at Kiawah Spring Classic; Troy Ties for Eighth
KIAWAH ISLAND, SC (troytrojans.com) – Fátima Fernández Cano tied her own school record as she shot a 6-under 210 to claim a share of the individual title at the Kiawah Island Spring Classic, which wrapped up Tuesday. Cano fired a 3-under 69 in the final round for her second individual title of the year and fourth in her career.
The Trojans shot 11-over as a team in the final round to finish in a tie for eighth place overall in the field of 41 teams. In addition to tying for first in the field of 216 individual golfers, Cano also bested the No. 52 ranked player in the country in William & Mary’s Alessandra Lui by five shots.
Cano finished with 12 birdies over the three rounds, which was tied for the fourth most in the field, while her collective 4-under on par-4 holes was tied for the lowest in the field. After opening with a bogey on her first hole of the day, Cano fired off four birdies over her next 12 holes to move to 3-under par on the day. She traded a bogey for a birdie over the final five holes to finish with her second round of 69 in the event.
Bianca Lohbauer tied for 63rd place overall after carding one birdie on the day and shooting a round of 7-over. Becca Horner, who tied for 96th place, had an eventful round for the Trojans as she sank four birdies on the day, but also had a pair of double-bogeys and one bogey to finish the round at 3-over. Lindsey Harrison shot a 6-over 78 in Tuesday’s final round to finish tied for 101st place, while Gabi Oubre’ carded a 5-over 77 and tied for 126th overall.
Troy will be back in action March 11-13 at the 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate in Augusta, Ga.
