Troy Men’s Hoops Hits Road for Final Pair of Games

TROY, Ala (troytrojans.com) – The Troy men’s basketball team begins a two-game swing through the state of Texas on Thursday night with a Sun Belt game at Texas State. Tipoff between the Trojans and Bobcats is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Strahan Coliseum.

Troy (9-20, 4-14 Sun Belt) heads into its final two games of the season looking to build some momentum for the offseason as the Trojans will return all but one of its regular contributors next year.

Leading the way is sophomore Wesley Person who ranks sixth in the league averaging 17.3 points per game and has the nation’s longest active streak with a 3-pointer in all 58 of his career games. Person became just the seventh player in Troy’s Division I history to reach the 500-point mark in a single-season (501 points) and needs just eight 3-pointers over the final two games to set Troy’s single-season DI record which is currently held by Hunter Williams (98).

Freshman Jordon Varnado has returned to his early season form over the past week for the Trojans as he has averaged 14.3 points and 6.7 rebounds over the last three games. Varnado is 22 points shy of breaking Person’s Troy freshman points record, which he set last season with 412 points.

The lone senior in Troy’s regular rotation, John Walton III, scored 18 points in Troy’s loss to ULM last Saturday and is averaging 15.2 points and 9.0 rebounds over the last nine games. Walton is four rebounds shy of moving into fifth place on Troy’s DI single-season rebounding list and is 14 back of fourth place on the DI career rebounding list.

Junior point guard Daniel Peace continues to be among the best defenders in the league as he ranks fifth in the Sun Belt with 1.4 steals per game, while freshman forward Shawn Hopkins has started eight straight games and has hit 19 3-pointers against league foes. Junior guard Jeremy Hollimon has started 22 games this season and is averaging 10.4 points per game.

Person scored 23 points, while Walton turned in a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds as Troy knocked off Texas State 66-57 in the first meeting this season. The Trojans shot 49 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Bobcats by 15 in the game.

Texas State (12-15, 6-12) has lost two straight games and remains a game back of Arkansas State for the final spot in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Head coach Danny Kaspar enters Thursday night’s game looking for his 500th career victory in his 26th year as a head coach.

Emani Gant leads the Bobcats with 13.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, while Texas State rank 25th nationally holding opponents to just 64.3 points per game and lead the league in fewest fouls committed and fewest turnovers.

Following Thursday’s game, Troy wraps up its season on Saturday at UT Arlington.
