UAB blanks baseball Trojans 7-0
BIRMINGHAM, AL (troytrojans.com) — The Troy baseball team dropped its Wednesday night contest to UAB, 7-0, at Regions Field.
Troy (7-3) only had three base runners and two hits on the night. Chase Smartt drew a walk in the first inning and Austin Hulsey led off the second with a single through the left side. Brody Binder was the final base runner and was the only Trojan to have an extra base hit on the night with a double down the left field line in the fifth.
UAB (4-5) did its damage in the second, third and fourth innings. The Blazers scored four runs on three hits in the second inning. Riley McCowan drove in the first run of the game for the Blazers on an RBI single to left field. UAB made it 3-0 on a Blake Johnson double to left field that scored two. A sacrifice fly added another, before the inning came to an end on a groundout.
The Blazers added to their lead with one run in the third inning and scored two more in the fourth.
Zack Lightsey (1-1) suffered the loss for the Trojans. He pitched 1.1 innings allowed four runs on three hits and struck out two. Troy used five more pitchers to close out the game. Reid Long and Houston Mabray made their first pitching appearances of the season, while Perez Knowles, Trey Johns and Corey Childress also saw action on the mound.
Adam Lamar (2-0) picked up the win for UAB pitching five innings, only allowing two hits and striking out one.
Troy travels to Pensacola on Friday for the Cox Diamond Invitational at Vince Whibbs Maritime Park. Troy will begin play on Friday night at 6 p.m. against in-state rival Auburn.
