Texas State’s Bobcats slash Trojans 78-57
SAN MARCOS, Texas (troytrojans.com)– Texas State shot 64 percent from 3-point range and 56 percent from the floor as the Bobcats knocked off Troy, 78-57, Thursday night in Strahan Coliseum.
Kavin Gilder-Tilbury hit on 6-of-8 from beyond the arc and finished with a game-high 26 points to lead Texas State (13-15, 7-12 Sun Belt). The Bobcats finished the game connecting on 9-of-14 from beyond the 3-point stripe, while the Trojans hit on just 5-of-20 (25 percent).
John Walton III led Troy (9-21, 4-15) with his fifth double-double of the season as he finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds to continue his hot streak at the end of the year. Over the past 10 games, Walton has averaged 15.3 points and 9.2 rebounds.
Wesley Person finished with 11 points and extended his streak with a 3-pointer out to 59 straight games, as he connected on two in the game. Jordon Varnado added six points and seven rebounds, while Jeremy Hollimon finished with nine points and Daniel Peace had seven points.
Troy used a 14-4 run over the closing minutes of the first half to close a 14-point deficit down to just four with 1:31 to play. However, Texas State flipped the momentum going into the break as Gilder-Tilbury hit a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left to give the Bobcats a 35-28 lead at the half.
Texas State used a 15-4 run over the first five minutes of the second half to build a 19-point lead. Troy answered with an 11-4 run to pull within 11, 55-44, with 11:34 to play in the game. However, the Bobcats stretched their lead out to as many as 23 before the final 21-point margin, which included a 3-pointer by Texas State at the buzzer.
The effort was there for the Trojans as they outrebounded the Bobcats 33-30 in the game, including 11-5 on the offensive glass. Troy outscored Texas State 15-6 in second-chance points, but the Bobcats held a 28-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
Ethan Montalvo added 15 points for the Bobcats, while Cameron Naylor had 14 points and seven rebounds. Texas State’s leading scorer coming into the game, Emani Gant, finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
Troy wraps up the season Saturday evening at UT Arlington. Tipoff between the Trojans and Mavericks is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. in the College Park Center.
