No. 67 Troy Men’s Golf Stuns No. 5 Auburn at Tiger Invitational
OPELIKA, Ala (troytrojans.com) — Paced by a near-record round from freshman Calum Masters, the No. 67 Troy men’s golf team erased a two-shot deficit to defeat No. 5 Auburn by three strokes and claim the team title at the Tiger Invitational Presented by Jason Dufner which concluded Tuesday at the Grand National Lake Course.
Masters shot a 6-under 66 in the final round, which was just one shot off the Troy school record and was the first round under par of his collegiate career. The Headland, Ala., native made the turn at 4-under par after an incredible run of four straight birdies on No. 3 through No. 6. Masters sat at 7-under following birdies on No. 10, No. 12 and No. 14 as he flirted with the school record, however a bogey on No. 17 ended his round at 6-under.
In addition to the victory over No. 5 Auburn, Troy defeated No. 25 Kentucky by 30 shots, No. 60 Kennesaw State by 17 shots and No. 61 Kansas State by 39 shots. The victory is Troy’s second of the year after the Trojans claimed the title at the Sun Belt Preview back in the fall. With wins over Georgia State and South Alabama in the Tiger Invitational, Troy is now 15-1 against Sun Belt opponents this season.
“This was a complete team victory,” Troy head coach Matt Terry said. “Each of the guys came up with big shots all week and I could not be more proud of a group of guys. We will enjoy this win for a day, but have to reset our focus for this weekend’s tournament at Florida State. Our guys played with a lot of poise today and were not rattled at all by the situation, which was great to see.”
The Trojans got another career-low round in Tuesday’s finale as Cam Norman, who tied for eighth place individually, carded a 4-under 68, which included a dramatic birdie on No. 18. Troy and Auburn stood tied at 2-under with Norman on the 18 green. With two groups behind him and uncertainty with what was on their scorecards, Norman calmly sank his fifth birdie of the day to draw a huge roar from his teammates and the Troy fans in attendance.
Luke Moser tied for 13th place after entering the final round as the individual leader. Moser finished the day 7-over, but thanks to his strong opening two rounds finished 3-over for the tournament.
Jared Bettcher finished his round with a difficult par putt on No. 18 to seal the victory for the Trojans. He shot 3-over on the day with four birdies on his card, which tied him for 18th place overall. Clayton Vannoy played a solid round for the Trojans with one birdie and just three bogeys for a 2-over 74; Vannoy tied for 28th place overall in the field of 96 golfers.
Troy will look to build on the momentum of the victory as it will be right back on the action this weekend at the Seminole Intercollegiate hosted by Florida State; play opens with 18 holes on Friday.
