Alabama opens 2016 spring football practices

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ( – The University of Alabama football team began spring practice Friday afternoon with a two-hour workout in shorts and helmets on the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields.

The Crimson Tide welcomed eight mid-year enrollees to the practice field including offensive lineman Charles Baldwin, linebacker Christian Bell, tight end Miller Forristall, quarterback Jalen Hurts, defensive back Shawn Jennings, offensive lineman Chris Owens, wide receiver T.J. Simmons and offensive lineman Jonah Williams.

Alabama also welcomed three new coaches to the staff with defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley, offensive line coach Brent Key and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt getting their first look at the 2016 squad.

The Tide returns a total of 14 starters, including six on offense, five on defense and three on special teams. The UA offense welcomes back a trio of offensive linemen in Ross Pierschbacher, Cam Robinson and Alphonse Taylor, as well as tight end O.J. Howard and wide receivers Calvin Ridley and ArDarius Stewart. Lineman Jonathan Allen and linebacker Reuben Foster are back for the defense along with defensive backs Minkah Fitzpatrick, Marlon Humphrey and Eddie Jackson. Alabama also returns place-kicker Adam Griffith, long snapper Cole Mazza and punter JK Scott.

The team will take next week off for spring break and will return to the field on Monday, March 21, with its second of 15 spring practices.

The 2016 Golden Flake A-Day Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. CT inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. The A-Day Game is once again free to the public.
