Troy Football Opens Spring Practice Tuesday

TROY, Ala ( – The Troy football team opens its second spring practice under head coach Neal Brown at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on the practice fields behind Trojan Arena. The Trojans have 15 practices scheduled for the spring, including the annual T-Day Spring Game which is scheduled for April 23.

“This is a 15-practice opportunity for the guys who are here to put themselves in position in fall camp to win a job,” Brown said. “This is their time to audition – to win a job, to win a backup job or to be a starter on special teams. Then we’ve got another 25-plus guys coming in for preseason camp and they are going to be given the same luxury, they are going to be given 15 to 18 practices to show they are ready to play.

“We are still a young football team and we still need to be a lot more fundamentally orientated than we are schematically, so that is what we are going to focus on this spring,” Brown said. “We are thin right now and we are really low on scholarships in the spring, so our number one objective has got to be to come out of the spring healthy. We’ve got figure out a way to get things accomplished, but also take care of our guys the best way possible.”

The Trojans are coming off a 4-8 season in year one under Brown, but Troy ended the season on a high note with a 41-17 blowout victory at UL Lafayette. Additionally, four of Troy’s five Sun Belt losses last season came by a combined 22 points.

Troy is getting a slightly later start to spring practice than some teams around the country, but the extra time in the off-season program was vital to the program’s development.

“Where we are, still in the infancy of our program, it was important for us to have those nine weeks in our off-season,” Brown said. “I thought it was very important to get our coaches involved in our off-season program after Signing Day. They were hands on with them in the weight room and in the agility drills – they were able to spend a lot of time with them.

“Physically we are going to be in a better place than we were when we finished up at UL Lafayette,” Brown said. “I’m encouraged and excited with the way that we finished up the year and I’m really looking forward to getting back on the grass with the guys. We are going to be a better football team. How much better, I think that will be determined this spring and during preseason camp. Our guys have done what we’ve asked them to do.”

All of Troy’s spring practices are open to the public.
