Troy Women’s Golf wins Samford Intercollegiate; Cano sets school record

BIRMINGHAM, Ala (troytrojans.com) – Paced by a school-record 8-under par from Fátima Fernández Cano, the Troy women’s golf team cruised to a team title at the Samford Intercollegiate, which concluded Tuesday at the Greystone Golf and Country Club.

The title is the second of the year for the Trojans and their fourth over the past eight tournaments dating back to last season. For Cano, the individual crown was her third of the year in just six tournament appearances; she finished second in another and no lower than a tie for 19th on the year. Cano lowered her stroke average for the season to 71.76 which would rank 13th nationally based on the latest reported numbers.

Cano finished her final round at even par after turning in a pair of 4-under 68s in the opening two rounds. Her 208 overall card breaks the school record of 6-under 210, which she previous set twice — the most recent occurrence coming earlier this month at the Kiawah Island Spring Classic.

Gabi Oubre’ continued her climb up the individual leaderboard as she shot the low round of the day with a 1-under 71 to move into sole possession of third place with a 2-over 218 for the event after opening the tournament with a 79.

Next on the leaderboard for the Trojans was a trio of freshmen led by Bianca Lohbauer. She completed the best tournament of her young Troy career as she took home fourth place with a 3-over 219 after carding a 4-over 76 in the final round. Competing as an individual, Antonia Poate capped off a solid two days with a round of even par to finish in a tie for 14th place, while Lindsey Harrison shot a 2-over 72 and tied for 19th place overall.

Becca Horner rounded out the field for the Trojans in 28th place after shooting an 83 on Tuesday. All competing as individuals, Kalyn Hudson tied for 31st after shooting a final round 76, while Bria Jansen finished in a tie for 41st and Abby Parks tied for 50th.

Troy will look to keep its momentum rolling when it travels to Kennesaw, Ga., for the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate on March 28-29.
