Troy softball hosts Kennesaw State Tuesday
TROY, Ala (troytrojans.com) – The Troy softball team will hit the field on Tuesday as it hosts Kennesaw State in a doubleheader at the Troy Softball Complex beginning at 3 p.m.
The Trojans (21-10) are looking to bounce back after dropping a conference series against No. 5 UL Lafayette this past weekend.
Troy’s offense is led by speedy senior Kate Benton who paces the club with a .485 batting average and leads the Sun Belt in stolen bases with 28. Benton leads the Trojans with 35 runs on 48 hits.
Hannah Day leads the country with 48 RBIs on the season in addition to ranking fourth in home runs (13) and fourth in home runs per game (0.46). The Crestview, Fla., native is near the top in every major statistical category in the Sun Belt and posts a .386 batting average with 39 hits, eight doubles and slugs an impressive .871.
On the mound, Ashley Rainey has recorded an ERA of 3.91, tossing two complete games, and has given up 56 runs in 87.2 innings of work. Freshman Claire Graves has posted a 3.99 ERA and has allowed just 26 earned runs to cross the plate this season.
Kennesaw State (20-11) enters Tuesday’s matchup having split a doubleheader against Stetson this past weekend. The Owls lead the Atlantic Sun Conference with a 4-2 conference record.
Kara Chambers and Missy Perkowski lead the Owls offensively. Perkowski has a .322 batting average with seven doubles, one home run and 15 RBIs. Chambers is batting .326 with five doubles, two triples and nine RBIs. Both players have 17 runs and 28 hits.
Kennesaw State’s pitching staff comes in with a 2.57 team ERA, led by Morgan Sikes at 1.65 and Logan Viers at 1.70. The two have combined for 115 strikeouts and 158.2 innings pitched.
The Owls lead the all-time series over Troy 6-3, sweeping a doubleheader against the Trojans last season at Bailey Park in Kennesaw, Ga., by scores of 4-0 and 3-1.
