Investigation of Inmate Found Dead in Cell Concludes

AP_980895953591Authorities have concluded that a 19-year-old inmate who was found unresponsive in his Montgomery cell last year died of a drug overdose.

District Attorney Daryl Bailey told the Montgomery Advertiser on Wednesday that a grand jury found no reason to bring criminal charges against anybody in connection with the January 2015 death of 19-year-old Tony Lewis Jr.

Bailey says the State Bureau of Investigation concluded that Lewis had ingested a large amount of amphetamine and methamphetamine. He says eyewitnesses told investigators that Lewis swallowed the substance all at once after hearing the guards were going to search the cells for illegal drugs.

Lewis was being held at Montgomery City Jail after having been arrested the month before on outstanding warrants for domestic violence charges.
