Lady Trojans step out for South Carolina weekend

COLUMBIA, S.C. (troytrojans.com) – The Troy softball team will take a break from Sun Belt Conference play this weekend as it travels to Columbia, S.C., to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday and Sunday at the Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT on Saturday and 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, and both games can be viewed on the SEC Network+ or ESPN3.

The Trojans (23-10) enter the weekend contests after a mid-week sweep of Kennesaw State on Tuesday.

Hannah Day and Kate Benton lead the Trojans offensively. Benton is batting .481 with 51 hits and still leads the Sun Belt in stolen bases with 29. She has crossed the plate 38 times and boasts a .538 on-base percentage.

Day continues to lead the nation in RBIs with 52 and is fifth in the nation in home runs with 14. She has a .383 batting average and is slugging an impressive .869 clip.

Ashley Rainey and Claire Graves lead the Trojans’ pitching staff. The veteran Rainey has given up 58 runs and walked only 20 batters in 92 innings of work and has a 3.88 ERA. The freshman Graves is getting more comfortable in the circle. She has a 3.72 ERA, tossing 52.2 innings and letting only 33 runs cross the plate.

South Carolina (25-9) enters the matchup having dropped three games against No. 3 Auburn but picking up a mid-week, 13-2, win against Charlotte.

The Gamecocks are hitting .313 as a team with Alexis Mack and Alaynie Page leading the way offensively. Mack owns a .375 batting average with 25 runs on 30 hits. Page brings the power recording 29 RBIs, six home runs, five doubles and three triples.

Jessica Elliot leads the South Carolina pitching staff with a 1.93 ERA. She has given up 89 hits and 63 walks in 108.2 innings of work.  Nickie Blue is hot on Elliot’s heels with a 2.49 ERA. Blue has tossed 106. 2 innings and has given up 90 hits and has let 45 runs cross the plate.

South Carolina leads the all-time series over Troy 2-1. Troy won the last meeting between the two teams in 2010 with a score of 5-4.
