South Alabama Officer & Suspect Wounded

Officer was undercover.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) – Authorities say a police officer working undercover in southern Alabama is hospitalized after he was shot during a gun battle that also left a suspect seriously wounded.

Mobile Police Department spokesman Terence Perkins tells The Associated Press the officer was in plainclothes and part of an undercover narcotics operation when a suspect armed himself with a handgun and opened fire around 3 a.m. Friday.

Perkins says the officer was shot twice and was in stable condition at a hospital early Friday.

Perkins said officers at the scene returned fire, wounding the suspect. He said the suspect was in critical condition at a hospital.

Perkins said the shootout happened between an Exxon service station and a truck stop in the Grand Bay area.

He didn’t have any further information about the officer or suspect.
