Masters Leads No. 53 on Day Two of the Hootie

AWENDAW, S.C. (troytrojans.com) – Calum Masters fired a 3-under 69 with five straight birdies over his final six holes to lead the No. 53 Troy men’s golf team in the second round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate at the Bulls Bay Golf Club on Monday. Troy moved up a spot on the leaderboard into 11th place.

Monday’s performance continued Masters’ recent trend of playing at a high level for the Trojans. The Troy freshman has played four of his last six rounds in the 60s and is working on his third straight top-10 finish as he is currently tied for ninth place and just two shots out of fifth.

Masters struggled out of the gate as he made the turn at 2-over par with a birdie, a bogey and a double-bogey. Playing the front nine to close out the day, Masters sank five straight birdies beginning on No. 4 to shoot 5-under on that half of the course and 3-under for the day.

The shot of the day came off the six iron of Clayton Vannoy who rolled in a hole-in-one on the 172-yard No. 7. It was the second hole-in-one of his Troy career after he recorded one as a freshman at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic.

Vannoy, who is tied for 40th place overall, finished his day 2-over as he carded a birdie and around five bogeys over the remainder of his round. Jared Bettcher rebounded from a tough opening round with a solid 1-over 73 on Monday. After a double-bogey pushed his card to 2-over, Bettcher responded with three birdies to move to 1-under with three holes to play. However, a tough double on his final hole pushed him back in the black and into 64th place.

Luke Moser picked up three birdies in his round and shot a 5-over 77 to sit tied for 65th place, while Cam Norman shot an 82 in the second round and finds himself tied for 70th place.

No. 16 South Carolina surged into the lead and will carry a 7-stroke advantage over No. 10 Wake Forest into the final round. The tournament features one of the strongest fields in the country as eight of the 15 teams are ranked in the top 100.

Troy will be paired with NC State and Kentucky for the final round and the grouping will hit the course at 7 a.m. (CDT) beginning on No. 10.
