MPD Offer More Two-Officer Patrol Teams

SAL PATROLCAMS PICMore two-officer police teams are patrolling in Montgomery, Alabama, after a white officer on solo patrol shot and killed a black man in February.

Police Chief Ernest Finley says two-man patrol units have been assigned to six “high-crime” districts in a pilot program that will likely be expanded.

Officer Aaron Smith has been charged with murder in the shooting death of Greg Gunn on Feb. 25.

Finley said the changes were made after the shooting “for the safety of the community and the officers.”

Police experts say two-officer units are safer and allow officers to interact more comfortably with the community.

Gunn’s family says Smith had no cause to detain him, but Smith’s attorney maintains he was reasonably suspicious of Gunn due to a recent string of burglaries in the neighborhood.
