Trojan netters blank JSU, thump Alabama A & M
TROY, Ala (troytrojans.com) – The Troy men’s tennis team played a pair of matches at home on Wednesday, shutting out Jacksonville State, 7-0, and beating Alabama A&M, 6-1. The Trojans have now won 10 of their last 11 matches ahead of Sunday’s Senior Day.
Troy (14-11) started the day against Alabama A&M (0-12) and cruised past the Bulldogs, starting with an easy doubles point that was clinched with two 6-0 wins.
In singles play against Alabama A&M, Tomas Fernandez started with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6. Jeremy Braud at No. 5 and Filip Mansson at No. 2 each dropped just one game as they each won 6-0, 6-1.
Calum McKinlay and Marcel Du Sart closed out Troy’s scoring with 6-1, 6-2 and 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Alabama A&M grabbed its lone point with a third-set, super tiebreaker win at No. 4.
While that match was in progress, the Trojans opened their match against Jacksonville State with 6-3 doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
Daniel Bustamante and Pablo Moreno opened singles play with easy wins at No. 1 and No. 2, 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1, respectively. Mustapha Belcora also cruised with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.
Giovani Samaha continued the shutout with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 and Andy Lau tacked on a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win at No. 4. Hassan Ndayishimiye made it a clean 7-0 sweep with a 7-6 (2), 6-7 (8), 1-0 (10-3) win at No. 6 singles.
Troy now turns its attention to a full slate of matches on Sunday. It will be Senior Day for Daniel Bustamante and Giovani Samaha with a ceremony schedule for 1:30 p.m. Around the Senior Day activities will be four matches. Troy will host South Alabama at 10 a.m., Florida A&M at 12 p.m., No. 51 Georgia State at 3 p.m. and Alabama State at 5:30 p.m.
