Lady Trojan netters nearly upset GSU
CLARKSTON, Ga (troytrojans.com) – For the second time in less than two weeks, the Troy women’s tennis team nearly knocked off a top-50 Sun Belt opponent, this time falling to No. 46 Georgia State, 4-3, on the road at GSU’s Clarkston campus on Friday.
Like last week against No. 43 South Alabama, Troy (11-6, 2-2) lost a tight doubles point and that proved to be the difference. The Panthers won easily at No. 1 doubles, but took a tight 7-5 decision at No. 3 to clinch the opening point. The other doubles match was tied at 6-6 when the point was clinched.
The Trojans, however, quickly grabbed a lead in singles play. Nancy Karaky won her eighth straight match, beating Chiara Volejnicek, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4. Efriliya Herlina then put the Trojans up 2-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Lara Vovk at No. 5 singles.
Georgia State (11-5, 3-0), however, would win the next three decisions to take the match. The Panthers win in straight sets at No. 6, then in three sets at No. 1 and again in straight sets at No. 3 to take the match.
Sanae Ohta closed the scoring for Troy with a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) win over Kristin Rehse at No. 2 singles. It was Ohta’s eight straight singles win.
The Trojans now must quickly regroup ahead of Saturday’s neutral-court match against Georgia Southern. Following that match, Troy will have just one more, at Florida State, before the Sun Belt Championships begin on Thursday, April 21.
