Trojans prep for first Spring scrimmage Saturday

TROY, Ala (  – With Troy at the unofficial midway point of spring practice, head coach Neal Brown will lead his squad through the first scrimmage of spring camp on Saturday in Veterans Memorial Stadium. Practice is slated to begin at approximately 11:30 a.m. and is open to the public.

“We will spend the first half of the day in a practice format where we do a lot of situational work,” Brown said. “Some 7-on-7, some special teams, some third downs. Then we are going to put the ball down and just play the last 20-30 minutes of practice. I am really intrigued to see how the newcomers will do in the stadium with people in the stands – the junior college transfers at wideout, defensively Baron Poole and Kris Weatherspoon, see how those guys are going to react.

“Fundamentally we are getting better, but it is hard in the spring to get a picture,” Brown said. “I don’t think any team in the country is a finished product right now. As a coach, you always want to be at your best all the time, but honestly we don’t have to be at our best until September. I try not to look at the whole of it right now, rather I try and look at individual improvement by each player.

“We still have a long way to go and we are only going to have 44 scholarship players that go through practice on Saturday, between having low scholarship numbers period and having guys out for various injuries. It will be a good opportunity for some walk-ons and some young guys to get a true look and for them to make the most out of it.”

For the second consecutive year, the football program will host a reunion for former players around the Troy University Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which takes place Saturday night.

“It is crucial to engage our former players,” Brown said. “We have a proud tradition here football wise that goes back over 100 years. Unfortunately, maybe people who are not too knowledgeable about Troy football think that we just started playing football in the Division I era and that’s simply not true. Troy has been playing good football for a really long time.”
