Geneva’s Lacy Stafford signs with Trojans
TROY, Ala (troytrojans.com) – The Troy women’s basketball program and head coach Chanda Rigby announced the addition of local high school standout Lacy Stafford on Wednesday. Stafford joins an incoming class that already features three other incoming freshmen.
“Our program is taking yet another step forward with the signing of Lacy Stafford,” Rigby said. “She is one of the most accomplished scorers that I have ever signed. Though I am excited about her potential to contribute to our high-scoring offense, I am equally excited about her potential to be a leader in our program. Lacy is a faith-filled young lady who is focused on making a positive impact both on and off the court at Troy University.”
A 5-foot-7 guard and a native of Hartford, Ala., Stafford comes to Troy from Geneva County High School where she scored over 3,000 career points and a was a five-time all-state selection. Stafford capped her high school career this season by winning the ASWA’s Class 2A Player of the Year award for the second straight season.
She led Geneva County to a 25-6 record and to the South Regional championship game last season, averaging 19.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 4.0 steals per game on her way to being named the Dothan Eagle Super 12 Player of the Year.
As a junior in 2015, Stafford led Geneva County to an AHSAA Class 2A State Runner-Up finish after averaging 18.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 assists per game, earning her first ASWA Class 2A Player of the Year award along the way.
An outstanding student as well, Stafford was Alabama’s 2015 Wendy’s High School Heisman winner and will be her class valedictorian.
Stafford finished her career with 3,045 points, the 17th most in AHSAA history. She also ranks in the AHSAA’s all-time top-15 with 328 made 3-pointers, 614 assists and 579 steals. In her five seasons as a starter, Stafford led the Bulldogs to a 120-30 record with regional tournament appearances in all five years. She was a five-time ASWA All-State selection and a five-time Dothan Eagle Super 12 selection.
Stafford is the second straight Dothan Eagle Super 12 Player of the Year to join the Trojans, following 2015 winner La’Tia Fils-Aime’ to Troy. She will also be one of two ASWA Player of the Year winners to join Troy in the fall as November signee Harriet Winchester of Keith High School was the Class 1A winner.
Stafford was also honorable mention all-state and a Dothan Eagle Super 12 selection in softball in 2015.
