Troy Women to play in 2016 San Juan Shootout
TROY, Ala (troytrojans.com) – The Troy women’s basketball program and head coach Chanda Rigby announced on Friday that the Trojans have been selected to play in the 2016 San Juan Shootout. The defending Sun Belt tournament champions will play two games in Puerto Rico on November 25 and 26.
Troy will take on Villanova on Friday, November 25 at 3:45 p.m. CT., then play Loyola Chicago on Saturday, November 26, at 1:30 p.m. CT. Both games will be played at Mario Quijote Morales Coliseum in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
“I am humbled by this opportunity Troy University has afforded us to play in this tournament in Puerto Rico,” Rigby said. “This is just one more experience that will enrich the lives of our student-athletes while attending Troy.”
The games will be the first regular-season contests outside of the United States in program history. They will be the third and fourth outside of the continental U.S. after the Trojans played two games in Hawaii in 1994.
Troy is coming off of a Sun Belt tournament championship and the second NCAA Championships appearance in program history. The Trojans won 20 games in back-to-back seasons for first time in program history, and did so with a familiar style. For the fourth straight season the Trojans led the Sun Belt in scoring, this time averaging 80.2 points per game, the seventh best mark in the NCAA.
Villanova also won 20 games last season, finished third in the Big East and advanced to the second round of the WNIT. Loyola Chicago posted a 14-16 overall record and finished fifth in the Missouri Valley last season.
