Lipscomb leads Plainsmen over Kentucky 5-2
AUBURN, Ala. (auburntigers.com)– Cole Lipscomb tossed his second career complete game as Auburn baseball defeated No. 22 Kentucky 5-2 on Friday at Plainsman Park.
“I was proud of how hard our team fought to get this big win on a Friday night,” Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said. “Cole (Lipscomb) had some balls hit hard and some balls hit right at people, but he kept throwing all three pitches for strikes and we played good enough defense to take him all the way to the end. Anfernee [Grier] got a great swing on his home run. He was great for us on a big Friday night win. I have to tip my hat to the fans tonight. Having 3,260 Auburn fans in the stands tonight to support the team was awesome for us.”
Lipscomb retired 23 of the final 25 batters he faced while striking out three with no walks. He scattered five hits and improved to 2-3 on the season.
Auburn (19-23, 6-13) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI double by Niko Buentello. Kentucky took advantage of an error in the second inning to tie the game 1-1.
The Tigers took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning on Anfernee Grier’s ninth home run of the season. The 3-run homer increased his RBI total to 32 on the season eclipsing the total of 31 over his first two seasons.
Grier had three hits and tied his career high with four RBI.
Kentucky (26-16, 10-9) scored a run on a wild pitch in the fifth to cut the Auburn lead to 4-2.
Grier picked up his fourth RBI of the night in the sixth on a RBI single that plated Damon Haecker and extended the Auburn lead to 5-2.
Haecker tied his career high with three hits and reached base four times. Blake Logan had two hits.
Evan White had two hits for the Wildcats.
Auburn and Kentucky continue the series on Saturday at 6 p.m. on SEC Network.
