AUM’s Powell grabs 6th POTW honor this season
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (aumathletics.com) —- Senior pitcher Taylor Powell was selected the Southern States Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for the sixth time this season, after leading the Warhawks to their first SSAC Tournament Championship this past weekend, the league office announced Monday.
The Alabaster, Ala. native picked up four wins in three days at the conference tournament to give the Warhawks their first tournament championship. Powell improved her record to 30-3, which also puts her second all-time in wins behind former All-American Cassie Jones, who earned 35 last season.
She has been an essential part to the Warhawks earning a 48-6 overall record, which also set a program-record for wins in a season with the previous mark being 46. The previous record was set by the 2015 team in which the program won its second consecutive National Championship.
Powell picked up a total of 26 strikeouts in the week, and was named to the All-Tournament team, as well as the Tournament MVP for her efforts. She started the week with a seven inning performance on five hits and no runs with six strikeouts in the 4-0 victory over Mobile in the first game of the tournament, and allowed her only run of the week in a 4-1 victory over No. 12 Martin Methodist where she added eight strikeouts.
The Winner’s Bracket Championship against (RV) Bethel was her third win of the tournament, where she hurled another complete-game shutout on 10 strikeouts and four hits. She finished the week with a 3-0 victory over No. 8 William Carey in the if-necessary game in another complete-game shutout effort where she added two strikeouts.
Nationally, Powell ranks first in wins. She is also ranked second in ERA (0.680), fourth in hits allowed per nine (3.47), fifth in opponent batting average (0.143) and seventh in total innings pitched (206). Additionally, she ranks second in total strikeouts (260), 12th in strikeouts per game (8.83), 12th in total earned runs allowed (20) and 17th in total runs allowed (27).
She leads the SSAC in wins, ERA, opponent batting average, strikeouts per game, total strikeouts, hits allowed per game and earn runs allowed.
Powell and the Warhawks will return to action on Monday, May 16 where the team was selected as one of the host sites for the 2016 NAIA Softball National Tournament Opening Round. Opponents and game times will be announced May 10.
