Troy softball’s regular season finale at South Alabama
TROY, Ala (troytrojans.com) – The Troy softball team wraps up its 2016 regular season schedule with a road trip to Mobile for a conference match-up against the South Alabama Jaguars at Jaguar Field this weekend. A doubleheader will be played on Saturday and is set to begin at 1 p.m. and the series finale on Sunday is also set for 1 p.m.
Troy (30-20, 11-10 Sun Belt) is led offensively by Kate Benton and Hannah Day. Benton is batting a team-high .415 and leads the club with 68 hits, 49 runs and 38 stolen bases. Day leads the team in power with 16 home runs, 63 RBIs, 11 doubles, a .727 slugging percentage and posts a .346 batting average.
Amanda Winters has been explosive at the plate recently, upping her batting average to .297 and launching ten home runs out of the park. She is second on the team with 44 RBIs and a .619 slugging percentage.
Claire Graves and Ashley Rainey lead the Trojans’ pitching staff. The veteran Rainey has seen the most innings with 130 and has tossed four complete games this season. She has recorded 51 strikeouts, only walked 32 batters and posts a 3.98 ERA.
The rookie Graves is hot on Rainey’s heels and leads the staff with a 3.86 ERA and by pitching five complete games. She has recorded 45 strikeouts, only walked 43 batters and has given up 54 earned runs.
South Alabama (29-16, 14-6 Sun Belt) is coming off a 9-0 shutout of Kennesaw State in five innings on Sunday.
Devin Brown leads the Jaguars in the circle and is having an impressive sophomore campaign. She has been named the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week five times this season and for good reason. She posts a 1.56 ERA and has struck out 279 batters in 179.2 innings of work. She has only given up 48 runs, 65 walks and opposing batters are only hitting .161 against her.
Emily Messer leads South Alabama offensively with a .423 batting average, 66 hits, 10 doubles, 42 runs and a .551 slugging percentage. After the season she will join Troy’s Day in Ohio to play for the NPF’s Akron Racers.
South Alabama leads the all-time series with Troy 16-10 and won two out of the three-game series last season at the Troy Softball Complex.
