Trojans track & field ready for Sun Belt Championships
LAFAYETTE, La. (troytrojans.com) – After a weekend off, the Troy outdoor track and field team will compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championship, which begins on Friday at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
“I’m excited to see how the kids compete,” Marc Davis said. “They had a great week leading into the championships, so we should have a good showing. We are coming together as a team, which is what is needed to be successful.”
The meet starts on Friday with preliminary rounds. The top eight finishes in the preliminary round make it to the finals, which are split up between Friday and Saturday.
25 athletes on the male side qualified for the championships, while 23 females qualified for spots. The Trojans will compete in 35 events, with 17 coming from the male side and 18 from the female side.
Zach Bias, Sawyer Sprung, Brackin Stewart and Brennan Garriques will compete in the men’s 5,000-meter run. The four individuals competing are the most for the males. For the females, the women’s 100-meter dash has five Trojans competing – the most on the team – with Sydney Wright leading the charge with an 11.72 time.
Corina Cox leads the throwers with a 56.04-meter discus throw, which she achieved at the Alabama Relays. It’s good for the 5th best throw in the East Region Qualifying List. Jaevyn Wortham is hot on her heels with the 21st best discus throw in the East Region with a 51.96-meter throw.
