AUM hosts, earns top seed in NAIA’s Montgomery Bracket Opening Round Site
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (aumathletics.com) —– The Auburn Montgomery baseball team received its NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round draw Friday and will be the top seed at the Montgomery Bracket, played at the AUM Baseball Complex from May 17-20.
The Warhawks will be joined in the bracket by No. 2 seed Keiser (Fla.), No. 3 seed Central Baptist (Ark.), No. 4 seed LSU-Shreveport and No. 5 seed Indiana Wesleyan.
Each of the nine host sites will feature a five-team double-elimination tournament with the winners joining host Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) at the 60th annual Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series in Lewiston, Idaho, from May 27-June 3.
Following a 45-12 regular season, the Warhawks earned the No. 1 seed at the site after earning an automatic berth as the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament runner-up. AUM was ranked No. 6 in the final 2016 NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, which was released earlier today. The Warhawks will be making their fifth trip to the Opening Round Tournament, where it sports a 7-8 all-time record.
Keiser, The Sun Conference Tournament Champion, enters the tournament with a 37-20 overall record and were ranked 25th in the final Coaches’ poll. The Seahawks are making their second trip to the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round tournament, recording a 1-2 record in the previous appearance.
The No. 3 seed will be the Mustangs of Central Baptist College from Conway, Ark. The Mustangs finished the regular season with a 44-14 overall record and won the American Midwest Conference Tournament. In the final NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Poll, Central Baptist was receiving votes. The Mustangs will be making their first appearance in the Opening Round Tournament.
The Red River Athletic Conference Tournament champion LSU Shreveport will be the No. 4 seed at the site and enter the tournament with a 38-18 record. The Pilots are making their eighth appearance in the Opening Round Tournament and have recorded a 14-10 record in previous appearances. LSUS was listed among the others receiving votes in the final NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Top 25 poll.
The final team at the Opening Round site is Indiana Wesleyan. The Wildcats were the Crossroads League Co-Tournament Champions and enter the Opening Round tournament with a 36-23-1 overall record. IWU is making its first Opening Round appearance.
Ticket prices for the tournament will be $8 for adults, $5 for students from participating schools (with a school ID) and free admission to children 6 and under.
