Barons blank Biscuits 3-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (biscuitsbaseball.com) – The Biscuits were shut out for the fifth time this season, falling 3-0 to the Barons on Friday night at Regions Field in downtown Birmingham.

Chih-Wei Hu (2-1) was on the mound for Montgomery, who entered Friday night’s game undefeated in starts by the Taiwanese hurler. The Biscuits were also 0-6 in Friday games during 2016, so something would have to give.

Hu pitched well, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts, but the Biscuits could not provide the starter with any run support on this night. The Barons got things started in the fourth, on an RBI-single by Trey Michalczewski to make it 1-0.

Then in the seventh, the Barons would add two more on an RBI-single by Jeremy Dowdy and an error by Biscuits left fielder Johnny Field to make it a 3-0 game. Birmingham starter Jordan Guerrero (1-1) kept the Biscuits off-balance for the second time this season, tossing six innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits on the way to his first win of 2016.

Lefty Brian Clark was superb out of the bullpen, firing two shutout innings of his own, as Peter Tago clinched his fourth save of the season in the ninth, getting Biscuits newcomer Pat Blair to ground into a game-ending double play.

The Biscuits are now 0-7 on Fridays, the only day of the week on which the team has yet to win. Montgomery will try to make it two out of three against the Barons on Saturday night when Jake Faria (0-4) does battle with Carson Fulmer (3-3) at 6:30 PM.
