Barons top Biscuits in series finale 7-3
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (biscuitsbaseball.com) – The Biscuits went behind early and couldn’t catch up in the fifth and final game of their series in Birmingham, falling 7-3 to the Barons on Monday night at Regions Field.
Ryne Stanek (1-5) got the ball for the Biscuits’ (23-20) final clash of their ten-game road trip, and while the right-hander struck out seven in just six innings, he was not at his best, serving up six runs in the first two innings of work. Barons (21-24) DH Nicky Delmonico launched his Southern League-leading ninth home run of the season in the first, and Joey DeMichele hit a two-run shot of his own in the second to give the Barons a 6-0 lead. Delmonico would add his tenth of the year, a solo shot, in the eighth as well.
That was all the Barons needed, as Blair Walters (2-1) flustered the Biscuits through six innings, tossing a quality start with eight punch outs en route to his second victory of the season. Montgomery mounted a comeback in the third, however, with an RBI-double by Jake Hager and a two-run double by Jake Bauers to cut the deficit in half at 6-3, but would not score after that as the club was held to three runs for the second straight game.
The Biscuits are now 4-15 in games in which they score three runs or less, including an 0-11 clip in such games away from Riverwalk Stadium. Their loss to the Barons was the team’s fourth series loss of the year (5-4 in all series with a 4-0 series record at home).
The Biscuits will look to get back on target after an off-day Tuesday when they open up a crucial six-game series with the first place Jackson Generals beginning Wednesday at 7:05 PM at Riverwalk Stadium.
