Trojans prep for Texas State in Sun Belt Conference Baseball Tournament

SAN MARCOS, Texas (troytrojans.com) – The Troy baseball team is set to face host, Texas State for its opening round matchup set to begin on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Bobcat Ballpark.

All conference tournament games can be heard live at TroyTrojans.com/watch or on WTBF 94.7 FM. Opening round games can be seen on the Sun Belt Digital Network, with each game following the first day available on ESPN3.

Troy (32-24, 17-13 Sun Belt) is fresh off a series win over rival South Alabama. After falling in the first game, 8-3, the Trojans bounced back to win games two and three by a combined score of 12-2 and held South Alabama to its fewest runs scored this season.

Joey Denison continued his hot hitting and is now tied for the team leader in average with a .317 batting average. He has the most home runs on the team with six and most doubles with 14. TJ Binder has the other .317 batting average and Brandon Lockridge has four triples this season, a team-high.

Grant Bennett will get the start for game one of the tournament. His last outing ended in no-decision, but he pitched six innings, struck out six and only allowed three runs. His 2.15 ERA is the second lowest in the Sun Belt.

Texas State (30-26, 16-14 Sun Belt) is led by Tanner Hill who has 17 doubles and 14 home runs this season, both team-highs. The Bobcats are off a regular season series road win against UT Arlington.

Lucas Humpal will get the start against the Trojans. He has a 6-5 record with 84 strikeouts in 100.2 innings pitched. Opponents are batting .241 when facing Humpal.

Bennett and Humpal went toe-to-toe in game one of the series between these two teams on April 29 at Bobcat Ballpark. Bennett went seven innings and only allowed two runs on 11 hits and struck out two. Humpal pitched 5.1 innings and gave up 10 runs – three earned – on 11 hits and struck out six, suffering the loss.

The Trojans jumped to an 9-0 lead through four and a half innings, before the Bobcats outscored the Trojans 8-3 with six coming in the ninth inning. The Trojans held on to win 12-8 and won the series against Texas State.

Troy will play either UL Lafayette or Arkansas State in the second round of the tournament. If the Trojans win they will play the winner of that game at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. If they lose, they will play the loser at 12:30 p.m.
